Auto Manufacturers Feeling Effects Of Japan Earthquake and Tsunami
The devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan last week has forced Japanese automakers to suspend production of automobiles and parts until factories can be repaired. Rolling blackouts, damaged electric power grids and infrastructure, loss of workers and a potential nuclear disaster could prevent factories from operating at full production for an extended period of time. Shortages have been minimal so far, but according to reports, every major automaker will be affected by the disaster by late April. Director of Automotive Forecast, Michael Robinet said, “Even if factories do start full production again, it could take seven weeks, with overtime, to make up for one week of lost production.” Continue reading
White House Proposal May Increase Insurance Costs
A new proposal by the Obama administration may have workers in the auto sector paying higher insurance premiums over the next ten years. The proposal will allow the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. (PBGC), the government’s pension insurer, to raise insurance costs by $16 billion in the next ten years. The move could have a big effect on the auto sector, which has some of the largest pension plans, and on suppliers, many of whom have terminated their pension plans in recent years.

Farm Equipment Lemon Law In New Jersey
A new legislation, introduced by Democratic Assemblymen John Burzichelli and Celeste Riley hope to extend the New Jersey Lemon Law to include farm equipment as well. Right now, farmers have no protection when it comes to defective farm equipment. If they are unable to use the equipment, they are unable to operate their farms, which leads to financial difficulties. The proposed bill has already cleared the Assembly Consumer Affairs Committee, and if passed will cover all new motor vehicle farm equipment purchased or leased in the state of New Jersey. Aftermarket Sunroof Recall
Webasto Product North America (WPNA) has issued a recall for their Hollandia 600 and 700 model sunroof as well as the Hollandia TVS 900 models because the adhesive bond between the glass and metal frame may debond from its frame. Because the recall involves non factory installed sunroofs, it affects less than one percent of vehicles with sunroofs. Webasto is asking all consumers who have a vehicle with a sunroof to take some easy steps to determine if their vehicle’s sunroof is included in the recall. Continue reading
Honda Discontinues Element After 2011
While some may hate the boxiness of the Honda Element, dog owners and bicycle enthusiasts found it to be just what they needed. The durable interior and enough room to store several bikes without removing the wheels made it perfect for those who didn’t want a pickup truck but needed something with a bit of room to haul stuff.
American Honda Motor Co. announced last Friday that the 2011 model will be the last year that the Element will be made. Honda said that the car has been overshadowed by their own CR-V and competitors small utility vehicles, like the Scion xB, Kia Soul, and the Nissan Cube. According to John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda, “The Element proved that ultimate functionality that came from thinking inside the box. It made boxy vehicle designs cool.” Continue reading
