GM Safety Initiative For Chevy Volt
General Motors has announced that they will be contacting Chevrolet Volt owners to bring in their vehicles and have the 120V charging cord replaced. This customer satisfaction initiative covers all 2011 Chevy Volts and certain 2012 Chevy Volts, and comes after GM received complaints of charging cords overheating and melting. According to GM spokesperson Randal Fox, the new cord will be more durable and able to withstand higher temperatures. This problem is not a recall, but a effort by GM to offer a more consistent charging experience. Earlier this year, GM announced that they will be adding steel plates around the Volt battery after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) experienced battery fires three weeks after crash tests were done on the hybrid vehicle.
