Hyundai will be asking owners of certain 2011 Sonata sedans, produced by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, to return to their dealerships for a problem affecting the airbag and seat belt safety systems.

According to the defect report, some early production models are equipped with Airbag Control Units (ACUs) that could experience electrical over stress. If the ACU circuitry is damaged by the overstress, the airbags and seat belt pretensioners may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.

Hyundai are actively investigating the issue with their ACU supplier to come up with a remedy for this recall and are expected to issue notices beginning in mid April.
